Rajasthani puppetry inspired characters and majestic cattle full of life - trees carved and painted in layers, moving in a gentle glide.
The most striking detail of the Gaushala Carousel lies in the marionette-style birds perched on stilts. With the turn of a simple hand-crank, the wooden wheel below begins its slow rotation.
A ramp at the base guides each stick to rise and fall, carrying the birds with it. At the top end of every stick is a bird whose wings, delicately linked with fine metal connectors, open and close as the stilts move. The mechanism is both exposed and enchanting — the steady disk anchors the motion while the birds above seem to flutter freely.
What begins as a mechanical study becomes a theatre of flight, where the gesture of a hand below sets an entire flock in motion above.

This piece was a part of one of the most pivotal moments at SHED. There was only one carpenter at the studio at that point, and a looming deadline. Everybody at the studio - interns, designers, the lathe team - all got hands-on.
Imran, of our design team, took charge and deployed mini tasks to different people in the studio. Some of them handling chisels for the first time ever. This was a pivotal moment and we got much more ambitious with our design and making approach, overall after this project. A lot of fear vanished.

The tree at the center becomes both witness and shelter — roots deep in tradition, branches wide in imagination.
