I am a game well-known to all —
Yet never found with birds, blooms & built forms.
A national memory living in legacy walls,
Like a moment in time inlaid
Made to honour, carved to remember
I am the story of Bhutan, retold in stone.

Our first carrom carrying architectural inspirations, the first introduction of copper inlay — for a traditional vernacular structure carrying its own legacies in Bhutan, transformed into a place for the current traveller, acting as a bridge between the past and the present.

A nod to the spiritual ascent from earth to heaven (with the sun and moon on far ends of the board): the central stupa became a spiritual axis, a place to begin the play.

Capturing Bhutan’s lineage in iconography was the central idea. Our motif style draws from Bhutanese art, and the symbols are then brought into a system of rules and motion as per the gameplay - composed in circles and symmetry.

The complexity of this piece, the architectural details to be captured called for newer materials and finer techniques. Copper was inlaid for the first time — a delicate contrast with the usual brass. Stone shapes became smaller, carving more intricate.

Of prayer wheels and archery arrows,

Gates and stupas, flags in breeze,

Sindoor dragons and Himalayans Monals

Magnolias to strike and poppies to play.

Born of mythology and artistic lineage,

I live as tribute to the national game.

Sindoor dragons amidst palace walls -

Bhutan's heritage in a square frame.
