The Subko board —
a carrom in marble and brass,
edges like postage,
counters marked with diamonds.

Born of language, coffee, and craft,
it speaks a voice both local and global,
evolved yet familiar,
playful yet precise.

Born of beans and the ritual of brew,
Of croissants glazed in blue

& languages in view —

A ticketed border, a potli of dust,
I am a board of identity that speaks of trust.

Crafted from brand, translated into stone,
Where marble holds what wood could not own.
I am a board of stories — designed to play,
Where design meets memory in Subko’s way.

A carrom board’s surface is perfectly flat — smooth enough for movement, still enough for strike. Wood, though familiar, swells and shifts with season. Stone was the material it asked for.

A first. A scale of inlay never attempted before. Unlearning hard materiality techniques and relearning fragility control — crafting not with what we knew, but what the piece needed to become.

Marquetry had always been our expertise, essentially, a part of our muscle memory — but stone inlay of this scale was never done in the past. No stone slabs were thin enough. So we sliced everything down to 8mm — a thickness delicate enough for play, yet strong enough to hold form.

Cutting, polishing, hand-setting and levelling - these are not really linear processes. They happen in multiple rounds, to refine every single detail until the perfect quality is achieved.

Of prayer wheels and archery arrows,

Gates and stupas, flags in breeze,

Sindoor dragons and Himalayans Monals

Magnolias to strike and poppies to play.

Born of mythology and artistic lineage,

I live as tribute to the national game.

Sindoor dragons amidst palace walls -

Bhutan's heritage in a square frame.

I keep the trace of hands,
the echo of flick and strike.
Marble remembers,
brass replies.

I am written in many tongues,
rooted in one.
A board, yes —
but also an archive of gestures,
ritual made game.
