Born of textiles, living in play,
Woven once, now carved in time,
My threads became stone,
My rhythm becomes a rhyme.
Parrots and peacocks, elephants too,
Patterns reborn with a lapiz blue.
The descending steps Rani ki Vav,
And all the other stories silently carved.

Patola’s pixel-like motifs, once woven in tie-dyed silk - a new voice of marble, sandstone, and semi-precious inlay. Each figure caught mid-action — a peacock in stride, an elephant turning, a parrot poised — motion living in still material.

From craft & culture to object and form - borders repeat and rhythmize like saree edges. Echoing Patola’s weave in stone, strikers and cases of the same design language - retelling the story beyond play.

Commissioned by the Asian Civilizations Museum, Singapore, this carrom reimagines Gujarat’s twin legacies — the textile intricacy of Patola weaving and the architectural depth of Rani ki Vav. Visualized in pixel-like graphics of the ancient ikat weaving technique, the structure of the board was defined by architecture. Columns, storeys, slabs and stepwells & fauna living amidst them. A kumkum-stained teakwood frame that nods to the classic Patola colour. We achieved this intensive and detail-oriented stone inlay, in an extremely tight deadline - that to us, speaks multitude of how far we have come in our journey of the technique.

I was woven without a single thread,
A loom of marble, a tapestry of red.
Born of craft and built for play,
The legacy of Gujarat finding its way.
Crafted for ACM, designed to preserve —
A tradition reimagined in every curve.

Water-jet cutting, hand-setting, sandblasting, oxide pigments, and polishing — the traditional processes of stone inlay adapted for a contemporary expression.
